Facts About Peru Print E-mail

Peru is a nation of nearly 29 million people. They are very religious, but very lost. Approximately 90% of all Peruvians claim to be Christian, but do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour. Only 0.7% of Peruvians are born again believers. The vast majority of the people have been taught to worship and adore religious figures, ancestors, and even to pray to departed loved ones and idols.

The Spanish language is spoken by the vast majority of Peruvians, and the country is open to evangelism. While the government willingly issues "religion" visas, and allows open evangelization efforts, the Gospel is not without opposition. The popular "Christian" church opposes efforts to evangelize their members, and has resorted to threats and even violence to oppose the spreading of the Gospel message.

Our plan is to begin in Arequipa, Peru, a city of nearly 1.5 million people, loacted 8,000 feet up in the Andes Mountains of southern Peru. There we will learn the language, culture and ministry under veteran missionaries.

The goal is to plant missions-minded churches that will ultimately send out their own missionaries, thereby reaching South America with South Americans. The over-riding philosophy of the ministry is found in 2 Tim 2: 2, which states "And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also."

The longer term plan is to train faithful men who will in turn go out and train other faithful men. The task is too large for one man to do alone. By winning and training other men to do the same thing I am doing, my efforts will be multiplied many times over, and we will see World Evangelism in action!
